| Title: |
The Secret Life of Us: young homeless women with complex needs |
| Start Date: |
01/02/2005 |
| End Date: |
01/11/2005 |
| Description: |
The project used in-house data to assist in improving understanding of the difficulties in sustaining accommodation for homeless young women (13 to 18 year olds) in a refuge setting. The project examined contributing factors to homelessness as well as the effect of childhood trauma, such as domestic violence and childhood sexual assault on young women engaging in self-harm behaviours.
The project then articulated the practices employed at Lowana as good practice in YSAAP, based on the evidence presented for working with traumatised young women and self harm. |

| Keywords: |
sexual assault, self harm, young women, domestic violence, alcohol and other drugs, mental health, SAAP, homeless assistance services |
| Methodology: |
The project used a content analysis of 156 casefiles, 32 log books and critical incident reports over a four year period. As well as demographic data including age, statutory involvement, periods of accommodation, parental status, current drug and aclohol use, prescribed medications, the analysis also sought references to sexual assault/abuse/violence prior to leaving home; self harm and other issues that complicate providing safe, secure accommodation.
The research included case studies and other issues to demonstrate the actual difficulties of working with complex needs.
A literature review included constructions of homelessness, and ill health and concepts and practice of working with self-harm |

| Ethics Statement: |
This project is in keeping with privacy and confidentiality laws and has ethical approval through the Australian Catholic University Human Research Ethics Committee. |
| Notes: |
Among other things, the project found a high incidence of sexual assault/abuse and domestic violence histories for young women. The research also found the younger the young woman was at first homelessness, the more likely self harm would occur. |
